INNOVATING HOW WE DETECT BUSHFIRES
NRMA Insurance one of Australia’s largest insurance companies, has helped Australians rebuild their lives after natural disasters for 85 years. Our task was to improve consumer awareness and brand perception by helping NRMA Insurance do more for Australian communities during natural disasters.
Australia has 50,000 bushfires a year. Since the turn of the century 186 people have been killed and the cost of 5 billions. Bizarrely the defence methods haven’t changed much in decades. According to the latest CSIRO report on bushfires, current methods can take up to 4 days to detect a bushfire. This is alarming enough when you consider that in as little as 30 minutes a fire can be classified as out of control.
“Detecting a fire sooner is critical in how we deal with the threat.” CSIRO scientis
What if we could use the power of technology to enhance the best of our human senses smell, which is, you can smell smoke long before you see fire? Introducing FireBlanket: An advanced detection and monitoring system for the vast Australian bush.
NRMA FireBlanket has been tested vigorously in both controlled and wild conditions, the tests were conducted by CSIRO’s Data 61 (Australia’s leading scientist in the field) and The Royal Fire Service. Both lab and infield bushfire tests were undertaken and the results were very positive.
The test results were shared with the public and results showed 55% of Australians felt NRMA Insurance cared more about the community than other insurers and 61% of Australians viewed NRMA as a more innovative brand.
